Delivering Exceptional Results, Every Time.
If you want to improve the energy efficiency of your home without replacing its existing windows, secondary glazing could be the ideal solution. At Prime Glazing, we supply and install high-quality secondary glazing throughout Chester and the surrounding areas, helping homeowners and businesses create warmer, quieter and more comfortable properties.
Secondary glazing is installed discreetly on the inside of your existing windows. It creates an additional barrier between your property and the outside environment, improving thermal insulation, reducing noise and providing an extra layer of security.
It is particularly suitable for traditional properties, listed buildings and homes situated within Chester’s conservation areas, where replacing the original windows may be restricted or undesirable.

What is Secondary Glazing?
Secondary glazing involves fitting a separate, slimline glazed frame behind an existing window. Unlike replacement double glazing, the original external window remains in place and largely unchanged. The gap created between the original window and the secondary glazing helps reduce heat loss and limits the amount of outside noise entering the property.
Because the secondary unit is installed internally, it can provide significant performance improvements without substantially altering the external appearance of the building.
This makes secondary glazing a practical option for many of Chester’s period homes, including Victorian properties, Georgian townhouses, traditional cottages and buildings with original timber sash windows. It can also be installed within offices, hotels, schools, apartments, commercial buildings and other properties where noise reduction, thermal performance or window preservation is important.
Secondary Glazing for Chester & Cheshire
Period Properties
Chester is known for its historic architecture and attractive period buildings. However, many traditional properties were constructed with single-glazed windows that offer limited insulation against cold weather and outside noise.
Replacing original windows may not always be appropriate, particularly when their design contributes to the appearance and character of the property. Planning restrictions may also apply to listed buildings and homes located within conservation areas.
Secondary glazing allows you to retain the existing windows while improving their overall performance. When carefully measured and professionally installed, the secondary frames sit discreetly behind the original glazing and are barely noticeable from outside.
This can be especially useful for original sash windows, where maintaining the traditional appearance of the building is often a priority.
Homeowners should always check whether listed building consent or other permissions are required before undertaking work. However, because secondary glazing is normally installed internally and does not require the original windows to be removed, it is often more suitable for sensitive and historic properties than complete window replacement.

Six Versatile Product Families
Our secondary glazing range covers six specialist product families, providing a suitable solution for almost every type of window and property.
Each system is manufactured in-house from durable aluminium and made to suit the individual opening. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, the design can be selected according to the style of the existing window, the required level of access and the performance needed.
Whether you require a sympathetic system for a traditional sash window or a robust solution for a demanding commercial environment, there is a product designed for the application.

Horizontal Sliding Secondary Glazing
The most widely specified product in the range. Available in two, three, four, and five-panel configurations, horizontal sliding secondary glazing suits casement windows, hinged windows, and any opening with vertical bars. Units run on durable aluminium tracks with brass rollers, and sashes are fully removable for cleaning access.

Vertical Sliding Secondary Glazing
Designed for traditional sash windows, our Vertical Sliders use a spring-balance mechanism that holds each pane at any chosen position, replicating the action of the original window. The tilt-in variant (TBVS) allows each sash to pivot inward up to 180° for cleaning without removing the unit. The slide-past option (SPBVS) allows both panels to travel fully past each other for unrestricted access.

Hinged Unit Secondary Glazing
Hinged secondary glazing opens inwards and provides slim 60 to 72mm sightlines with no transoms or mullions. Multi-point espagnolette locking is standard. The heavy-duty variant handles units up to 180kg and supports double-glazed sealed units in 24mm and 28mm configurations, making it the only product in the range capable of carrying sealed units.

Lift Out Secondary Glazing
Lift out secondary glazing provides removable panels at the lowest price point across the range, with the slimmest sightlines of any product. Face-fixed or reveal-fixed, it is particularly well suited to decorative or non-opening windows, heritage settings, and arched openings. Maximum dimensions reach 3,220mm wide and 3,307mm tall.

Fixed Secondary Glazing
Fixed secondary glazing is the most economical product in the range. Permanently fitted with turn-button release for cleaning access, it is suited to arched, shaped, and bespoke applications. Note: fixed units are not suitable for fire escape locations and must not be specified as such under Building Regulations.

Bespoke, Made to Measure Secondary Glazing
For projects that fall outside standard parameters, bespoke secondary glazing covers arched, bay, curved, circular, and angled configurations. Bespoke units are custom-quoted and carry a 10-year guarantee. Commercial projects with non-standard openings, including churches, hotels, and hospitals, regularly use this route.

Prime Glazing have just finished replacing all the windows and front and back door at our 3 bedroom detached house in Upton Chester. They did an excellent job and I can thoroughly recommend them. Joel and Tom were polite, courteous and efficient. The price quoted was reasonable and they did exactly what they said they would do in terms of delivery and fitting. The fitters were very good and left everything clean and tidy. I am very happy with the finished product.
